We chat to Alex about her new class 'Pilates Style Core & Stretch'...
When does this class run?
I teach this class every Monday at 7.30pm for an hour.
Is your Pilates style class suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. All levels are welcome but this class is great for newbies who are looking to understand the basics and take time to ensure they’re practising correctly and safely.
Can you tell us why Pilates movements are so beneficial for so many people?
Wow…well that’s a big question with so many answers. Basically movement is medicine. Pilates incorporates both functional movement, building core and back strength as well as working on hamstring flexibility which plays a big role in ensuring the correct pelvic position. This in turn can help to relieve lower back and hip pain, hence why so many people benefit from taking a bit of time to look after their bodies, recorrect posture and try to prevent injuries and stay healthy.
How did you start teaching Pilates style movements?
Well I actually hold a a bachelor degree in dance studies from the Greek Ministry of Culture (Rallou Manou Professional Dance School). I’m a professional contemporary dancer, choreographer and dance teacher but I’m also qualified in Thai Yoga Massage Therapy and Yoga, so this ‘Pilates Style Core & Stretch’ class just felt like the best way to combine all my knowledge and skills into one.
Would you say this Pilates style 'Core & Stretch' class works on building strength
100% !! Pilates in general is a great way to get both strong and flexible! No only in the core and abs but to build back strength to prevent future injuries and to tone up the body in general.
How is Pilates different to yoga?
Pilates is different to yoga because the majority of Pilates movements are either lying on your back or lying on your tummy. Many yoga postures are standing whereas my Core & Stretch class especially is about taking time to be really mindful in the exercises so there are no super quick transitions between poses or exercises. This gives the student time to focus on what’s happening internally and also gives me time to watch their alignment making sure their practising safely.
Does Pilates compliment other exercises?
Of course, Pilates can be practiced alongside any other type of exercise. It’s a great way to balance any strong cardio/ weight training or as simply a starting point for getting fit and mobile.
What should your students wear?
Something comfy. We practice barefoot so no shoes are necessary but you’re welcome to wear socks if you’d feel more comfortable. We also have mats here at the studio but if you have your own you’re more than welcome to bring it along.
Are students welcome to come along even if they don't feel flexible?
I get asked this all the time and the answer is always YES come along because flexibility is what we’re all trying to achieve. That’s like saying “I’m too dirty to have a shower”! The whole point of the class is to work towards the goal of flexibility and mobility so yes please come along no matter what level!
I've got an injury, should I tell the teacher?
YES. It’s important that our teacher knows any injury so we can help you with some specific adjustments to make your life easier. It’s also really lovely for other people in the class to realise how a yoga pose can be altered or modified in order to make it more accessible.
How do students book on?
