Where does Shiva coffee originate from?
Here at Shiva, located in Nansledan Newquay, we make our coffee using Cornico coffee roasters. This coffee originates from Burundi, which is among the smallest coffee-producing countries in East Africa. The location itself provides ideal conditions for coffee production, these include elevations of 1500-2000m, Arabica Bourbon coffee trees and abundant rainfall. As well as approximately 800,000 families who cultivate an average of 150-200 coffee trees per farm.
In Burundi the production of coffee was enhanced by the addition of a coffee washing station, which was built in 2016 at Migoti Mountain by Migoti coffee company. The coffee trees surrounding this area are owned by the community, this means Migoti purchases the coffee cherries directly from the farmers who harvest and deliver the cherries to the station.
The majority of the staff are women, working together to enhance the coffee by drying it on raised drying tables and ensuring defective beans that compromise the coffee quality are removed, ensuring the coffee is at its finest.

Why we buy from Cornico?
One of the many reasons we buy from Cornico here at Shiva is because like us they are conscientious about their impact on the environment.
Cornico coffee bags are bio-degradable and the bag lining is oxo bio-degradable, Cornico coffee bags are made from sugarcane and hemp paper which degrades far quicker than the lifetime plastic labels. Perspectively, hemp is much more effective than even paper as a material. This is because hemp stalk can grow in an astonishing four months, whereas a tree will take between 20 and 80 years to grow.
As well as the coffee bags, the boxes they come in are also bio-degradable and even the tape used to seal the boxes is made from cellulose.
Another reason Shiva supports Cornico coffee is because we are passionate about supporting local businesses and the Cornish economy. Buying local gives us the opportunity to contribute to the well-being of local communities based in Newquay and the surrounding area. Buying local products and services means money stays within the community, helps to provide jobs, pays local taxes and supports local businesses.
Brew time and technique
The coffee itself is a vital but solitary resource in perfecting the art of a good coffee. Other factors also come into play, such as brew time and technique. The way you brew coffee can drastically affect the final taste and quality, meaning the difference between that lighter more acidic flavour opposed to a coffee which is deep and rich in taste.
So what is brew time?
This is the amount of time it takes to brew a batch of coffee from start to finish. For our coffee machine at Shiva this is the instant the water and ground coffee come into contact with one another, finishing when the coffee has been fully brewed. Our sweet spot sits between 28-32 seconds.
Another element we consider when creating your coffee is the grind size. Grind size affects how fast or slow water flows through the coffee grounds. Combining these factors works towards making your perfect cup of coffee.

The nutritional health benefits of coffee
When ingested in moderation, coffee can have a multitude of nutritional health benefits. The stimulant properties of coffee aid in allowing us to feel more energised and have been proven to enhance memory and cognitive function. This is helpful in contributing to productivity as coffee activates the central nervous system.
Furthermore, roasted coffee, like we use at Shiva, is high in antioxidants. Antioxidants prevent our bodies being oxidised by toxins and chemicals. By having a diet high in antioxidants it is thought to reduce the risk of many diseases, such as heart disease. Coffee contains other vital minerals that are good for the body, such as vitamin B, potassium and magnesium.
Don’t fancy a coffee? Not a problem
At Shiva we offer a verity of coffee alternatives, whether you’re looking for that caffeine fix or not. A speciality of Shiva is our proper chai, made with jimmy’s homemade Indian recipe. Chai tea is a traditional Indian spiced tea, made up of different spices such as cardamon, cinnamon, ginger, fennel sticks and nutmeg. At shiva we make it with coconut milk and add a little vanilla for that extra sweetness. You can enjoy your chai in a variety of ways, whether you want it decaffeinated, iced, dirty (with espresso) or filthy (with rum), we’ve got you covered.
Looking for a drink you can enjoy at any time of the day, why not try our turmeric latte? Naturally caffeine free, richly spiced and warming, it could be just what you’re looking for. People in India have been drinking turmeric and milk with spices as an Ayurvedic medical remedy for years. Turmeric contains curcumin, which has been proven to be highly effective in reducing inflammation and is beneficial in reducing pain. It is also a powerful anti-oxidant and helps to boosts immunity levels as turmeric is anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal. These properties protect us from a verity of infections. Because of this it has a unique taste and beautiful bright golden colour. It has become a staple here at shiva.
Another coffee alternative we offer at shiva is matcha. A type of green tea, however it is grown differently and as such has a unique nutrient profile. This is done by using the youngest, freshest part of the plant, preserving the colour as well as the nutrients. The properties of matcha are known to boost brain health, function and alertness, support a healthy heart and cardiovascular system and has been thought to include stress relieving effects. Although a form of tea, matcha is relatively high in caffeine compared to other teas, so definitely opt for this if you want something different from a coffee but still want the caffeine fix.
