Everything you need to know about Shiva's 6 week total beginners yoga course!
Whether you’ve dabbled with a few classes back in the day or are a total newbie and have never set foot in a yoga class before… we’ve got all the info you need!
Technically what is a beginner?
The majority of students who get involved in our beginners course have never stepped onto a yoga mat before, and have zero experience. If that’s you, then you’re in the right place. Some people book who have practiced yoga maybe 20 years ago but have completely forgotten what it was all about; some join who have completed a couple of home yoga practices via youtube through lockdown and want to ensure they’re practising safely. No matter what your experience, fitness level or agility… this course is tailored to all bodies.
What should I expect from your beginners yoga course?
Firstly we think it’s important that you expect to have a few laughs! Our aim here at Shiva Studio is that every student will finish the beginner yoga course feeling confident to join any other class on the timetable. We want you to leave with a good understanding of sun salutations, some standing & seated postures, and to be familiar with the studio set up.
How long is the beginner class & what do we do?
Each class is 60 minutes; we start with a quick discussion, followed by breathing techniques and an opportunity to unwind and let go of the day. We then move through our gentle yoga warm up, before getting stuck into breaking down the alignment of the chosen yoga postures. There’s always time factored in for cooling down with some relaxing movements and a chance to slow down & rest, before going back into your day.
What do I bring to the yoga class?
We have everything you need here at the studio including yoga mats but if you have you’re own you’re more than welcome to bring it along. We just recommend you wear some comfy clothing, and you’re welcome to bring a water bottle with you too.
Do I wear shoes in yoga?
We get asked this a lot, and the question is no. You’re welcome to wear socks during the yoga class but shoes can be left outside the studio space in the allocated storage in the reception area.
What is the point of practising yoga?
People practice yoga for a variety of reasons such as getting strong, stretching or maybe just calming down.
Over the years of teaching this beginner yoga course we have come to appreciate that people come along for different reasons and want different outcomes. Some want to just chill out, and yoga can absolutely provide that opportunity to just bring a little calm and reset mentally as well as physically. Others come along to build strength or work on mobility & flexibility and we cover all these areas throughout our 6 week total beginners yoga course.
How have others benefitted from completing your beginner yoga course?
Many of our beginner yoga graduates feel confident to come along to any other yoga class on our timetable and practice with any teacher. They understand what props best suit their body; what movements they need to adjust and tailor to make the yoga movements suitable for their ability.
Others have completed our course with a strong understanding of alignment in order to develop and deepen their yoga at home, safe in the knowledge they are practicing the poses correctly and understand the purpose of the postures.
Should I come along even though I don't think I'm fit enough to join in?
Absolutely! Many of our students have started the course thinking in this way, and we want everyone to feel at ease, knowing that whatever pose or posture we will be working on, there is ALWAYS a way to make it accessible for all!
I've got an injury, should I tell the teacher?
YES. It’s important that our teacher knows any injury so we can help you with some specific adjustments to make your life easier. It’s also really lovely for other people in the class to realise how a yoga pose can be altered or modified in order to make it more accessible.
