The Best Roast Dinner in Newquay

Sunday Roast Club: Everything you need to know about roast dinners at Shiva…

Join Jimmy, as we find out why roast dinners are such a big thing at Shiva, and how the Sunday Roast Club came about.

Why did you decide to offer roast dinners?

Basically we opened Shiva at the start of Covid, getting the keys 2 weeks before the first lockdown…. not ideal! But it made us adapt and think outside the box of what we originally had planned.  Roast dinners were never originally part of the plan, but with restaurants still unable to open for eat in, we wanted to offer Sunday roasts to give everyone something to get excited about so people could really look forward to tucking into some yummy food at the end of a long week. Since then we’ve just kept the tradition going with the option of now eating in every Sunday at 5pm.

What's included in your roast dinners?

We offer the choice of either 12 hour slow roasted beef, roast chicken or cranberry nut roast. We think it’s vital that a roast dinner includes an epic cauliflower cheese too! So that’s a high priority for us, as well as lots of roasted veggies, plenty of greens, proper Yorkshire puddings and all topped with lashings of gravy.

Why is a Sunday roast dinner so special to you?

I think it just symbolises total chill time.  A roast dinner is all about finding some time to slow down at the end of a busy week, enjoying a really good tasting plate of food that leaves you feeling full and comforted.  I’ve always loved cooking for lots of people and getting friends and family together so I figured I should just extend the offer out to our customers. Plus no-one wants to do lots of washing up after eating a roast dinner so it’s a win-win for everyone!

Is there a minimum order for your roast dinners?

Not at all, whether your eating in or taking away, we cater for individuals who just fancy treating themselves (because we know it’s a lot of work cooking a roast dinner for 1 person!) Or, why not order for the whole family and give yourself the afternoon off from slaving away cooking and prepping all the roast veggies.  We’ll take care of that for you so you can just sit down and enjoy the main event of tucking into a yummy plate of food!

Do you offer a roast dinner that caters for vegans?

Of course! Our cranberry nut roast is totally plant based and we always make a dairy-free cauliflower cheese to ensure no-one misses out!

When we lived in Indi, running a yoga-teacher-training school, we had students from all over the world so I’m so used to catering for all different dietary requirements and quirky requests. Nothing is too much effort as we just want everyone to enjoy the meal and for everyone to be able to get involved.

What's your favourite element of the roast dinner?

Our roast chicken is definitely a winner but I personally love the 12 hour slow roasted beef; I think it’s because of the amount of effort that goes into prepping and caring for this delicious cut of meat.  It’s so tender and juicy and I feel really proud of serving this to our customers as I know they’re going to love it!

Do you offer your roast dinners all year round?

We offer our Sunday roast throughout the winter from the start of October until Easter.  We find that people want fresh and lighter meals in the summer and we want to keep that cosy vibe going through the colder months. Plus we like to mix it up!

How do we book?

Just head to our website to reserve your pick up time if takeaway is what you’re after! We offer takeaway roast dinner every Sunday at 4pm and 6.30pm.

Do you use local Cornish suppliers for your roast dinner ingredients?

Absolutely, we have great relationships with local suppliers and love serving up local produce to local customers.  We call up our fruit and veg suppliers with our shopping list, and they deliver boxes of incredibly fresh ingredients first thing in the morning ready for us to get prepping. Our family run butchers are really passionate about the produce they supply and that’s important to us too. Even our cauliflower cheese is made with local Cornish dairy ingredients. We’re lucky enough to know all the local suppliers well now, and we all support each other.

Most importantly, do you offer dessert?

Silly question! Of course we offer dessert, every week our lovely customers have the choice of cinnamon bun bread and butter pudding served with custard or a sticky toffee pudding served with Dead Man’s Fingers rum sticky toffee sauce!
