What is Rocket Yoga?
Rocket Yoga is a fast-paced, dynamic flow and follows a set sequence. Its structure is similar to that of Ashtanga Yoga, consisting of Surya Namaskar, standing & seated poses and twists with a few cheeky arm balances and inversions thrown in for good measure.
Who is it for?
Everybody is welcome to practice rocket yoga. It’s a led class and is accessible to all. as long as you’re willing to move, get sweaty and get strong. Rocket yoga is good fun and is definitely a more powerful practice than a slow flow class for example, but we always offer variety of modifications so everyone in the room can get involved in the postures and the movements. In Rocket Yoga, students can modify and make their interpretation of the traditional asana (pose). If they get stuck with a pose, they can either skip it or find easier ways to practice it instead of rigidly sticking to the pattern.
How does Rocket yoga vary from Ashtanga Yoga?
For all those who find Ashtanga Yoga too difficult, Rocket Yoga is a great alternative. And how does it accomplish this? Rocket Yoga was designed to make Ashtanga Yoga, which is a physically difficult form of yoga, more accessible. Within the rocket yoga practice the traditional connection of the breath to the movement (aka the vinyasa) and a focused intention are still integral to the practice, just like in Ashtanga. However in a Rocket yoga practice, everybody gets to do what they want to do. The hard stuff, and the fun stuff. From the off. You might not be able to actually do it yet, but at least you get to try… with some good tunes in the background.
How long is the class?
Each rocket yoga class is 75 minutes (ish). We run the classes at 7am so appreciate some may need to leave a little earlier to make it to work on time.
How did rocket yoga come about?
It was in the 1980s in San Francisco that a guy called Larry Schultz developed Rocket Yoga. The name was given by Bob Weir of ‘The Grateful Dead’ band because he thought Rocket Yoga was quick and more accessible. Which it is. Larry Schultz, the creator of Rocket yoga, had been nicknamed “the bad boy of Ashtanga”! He earned this nickname by breaking away from traditional yoga practices and creating a version that could be customized to the convenience of the practitioner.
